About Swampscott
map
Swampscott Massachusetts is a small scenic seaside community located north of Boston and is home to a large number of commuters who board the train each morning from one of the last remaining Victorian style depots in the country.

There are actually many other interesting and historic buildings situated in Swampscott. They include Marian Court once known as White court which was the summer residence of Calvin A. Coolidge and a Georgian style town hall which was the former home of Elihu Thompson who was the founder of the General Electric Company.

Swampscott beaches attract visitors of all ages who enjoy their refreshing ocean breezes. Fisherman's Beach provides a picturesque view of Swampscott Harbor with its many brightly colored fishing vessels and pleasure boats. Swampscott is responsible for two major contributions to the fishing industry-the Swampscott dory and the lobster pot. These are both still used by fishermen world wide.

AHEM Salon: Rethinking Socialization

Come partake in lively, stimulating discussion with fellow homeschooling parents in a relaxed, friendly environment. The topic will be “Rethinking Socialization.”

One of the first questions homeschooling families are asked is, “But what about socialization?” In this discussion we will examine our beliefs about what it means for children to be “socialized.” We will also brainstorm ideas for supporting homeschoolers as they forge meaningful connections with others and participate in groups and communities in a variety of social contexts.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, October 16 at 7:00 PM at Panera Bread, 433 Paradise Rd., Swampscott, MA. If you want, you can purchase soups, salads, sandwiches, baked goods, and hot and cold drinks at Panera. Please do not bring outside food in. If you plan to purchase food, please try to arrive a few minutes early to order so we can begin the discussion promptly at 7:00 PM.

The discussion will be geared toward adults, so we ask that you leave at home children who will be as happy or happier there with a loving caregiver. Interested teens are welcome to attend.

Cost is $15/person (teen and adult) to reserve your spot; the full price will be refunded to you, making your participation FREE. If you don't show up, your money will be donated to support the non-profit mission of AHEM.

No refunds after October 10th except those made to meeting attendees. Those with email will receive directions about a week before the meeting.

Salon Series participants will be added to the Friends of AHEM list unless they specifically opt out.

Power Poetry

Tweak to Tweet

Enigmas: short poems that make use of irony and compressed language to leave the reader involved in play. During the enigma workshop Power Poetry MeetUp members will practice writingshort, ironic poems with vivid imagery and a sense of playfulness: Twitter, no problem, tweet. IN the enigma workshop Power Poetry MeetUp, members will be asked to embrace two ideas when writing. The first idea is Emerson’s suggestion that each line should be a poem. The second idea is Eliot’s notion that, “meaning [is] necessary to soothe the reader while the poem does its work.” With those two ideas we will have fun with language.

At the close of the workshop the Power Poetry MeetUp community participants will have the opportunity to Tweet their enigmas, share them on Facebook, or pen them on cocktail or coffee shop napkins. Enigmas then could be left in dentists’ offices, on lunch tables, or as small thoughts to consider on commuter trains
